True HEPA has a defined meaning: 99.97% removal of particles at 0.3 microns — the hardest-to-catch particle size (smaller and larger particles are actually caught more easily). This standard comes from the original HEPA spec, and genuinely True HEPA filters are independently tested to meet it.
“HEPA-type” and “HEPA-like” exist specifically because their makers cannot legally claim True HEPA. They catch the easy stuff — dust bunnies, lint, pet hair — and let the fine particles (pollen, dander, smoke, PM2.5) flow through. If your goal is allergy relief or smoke removal, a HEPA-type unit is a desk fan with a dust net.

- “HEPA-type” in the headline, “True HEPA” nowhere — the listing is telling you it’s not True HEPA
- “99% HEPA” without the 99.97%@0.3µm spec — 99% of what size? Usually big particles only

- Small print: “effective on particles 2.5 microns and larger” — that’s not HEPA performance; the fine stuff is 0.1-2.5 microns
