How We Test Air Purifiers
We evaluate every air purifier against the same objective criteria. No paid placements, no manufacturer influence — just data-driven analysis based on industry standards.
An Honest Note Before You Read On
We don't run a laboratory, and we don't pretend we do. We are a small team of reviewers who compile and analyze publicly available data — AHAM-certified CADR results, manufacturer-published specifications, third-party measurements, and verified owner reports — and turn them into practical buying recommendations.
Where a number comes from a manufacturer, we say so. Where it comes from an independent source (like AHAM certification or third-party lab tests), we say that too. Our value isn't in fancy test chambers — it's in transparent analysis, honest comparisons, and total-cost math that most sites skip.

Our Testing Methodology
1. CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate)
CADR is the industry-standard metric for air purifier performance, developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). It measures how quickly an air purifier removes smoke, dust, and pollen particles from a standardized test chamber.
We only use AHAM-certified CADR data — not manufacturer self-reported figures. AHAM independently tests units in their laboratory following the ANSI/AHAM AC-1 standard. If a unit is not AHAM-certified, we note this prominently and explain why certification matters.
How we calculate room coverage: AHAM recommends CADR × 1.55 = maximum room size in square feet (assuming 8-foot ceilings). We use this formula for all room size recommendations.
2. Noise Levels
Noise is often the deciding factor for bedroom use. We collect the manufacturer-published decibel (dB) ratings at each available fan speed — and where an independent source (such as RTINGS or a verified third-party lab test) has measured a unit, we prefer and cite that number instead, since lab measurements are usually higher than official claims. We then translate them into real-world equivalents:
- ≤ 25 dB: Quieter than a whisper — suitable for light sleepers
- 25-35 dB: Library-quiet — comfortable for most bedrooms
- 35-45 dB: Refrigerator hum — noticeable but not disruptive
- 45-55 dB: Normal conversation level — may disturb light sleepers
- 55+ dB: Loud — best for daytime use only
3. Filter Costs & Long-Term Value
A cheap air purifier can become expensive if filters need frequent replacement. We calculate the 5-year total cost of ownership:
- Purchase price — the upfront cost of the unit
- Filter replacements — based on manufacturer-recommended intervals and current filter prices
- Electricity costs — calculated at the U.S. average of $0.14/kWh, assuming 12 hours of daily use

4. Filtration Technology
We evaluate each unit's filter configuration:
- True HEPA vs HEPA-type: We only recommend units with True HEPA filters (captures ≥ 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns). "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like" filters are not equivalent.
- Activated carbon weight: For VOC and odor removal, the weight of activated carbon matters — thin carbon sheets are largely ineffective.
- Pre-filter type: Washable pre-filters reduce long-term costs and extend HEPA filter life.
- Ionizers & ozone: We flag any unit that produces ozone, even trace amounts, and note the health implications.
5. Features & Usability
Beyond raw performance, we assess real-world usability:
- Auto mode accuracy: Does the particle sensor respond appropriately to real pollution events?
- Sleep mode: Does it dim all lights and reduce fan speed? Is it actually quiet enough?
- Filter replacement indicators: Are they timer-based or actual sensor-based?
- Controls & app: Intuitive physical controls? Useful smart features?
- Build quality: Materials, fit and finish, warranty length
