Smoke is one of the hardest airborne pollutants to remove because it contains a mix of fine particles (PM2.5), gases (CO, VOCs), and tar droplets. Standard HEPA filters catch the particles, but you also need activated carbon for the gases and odors.
During wildfire season, outdoor AQI can spike to 200+ (Very Unhealthy), and indoor PM2.5 rises within hours if windows aren't sealed. You need to size your purifier aggressively — target 5–6 ACH minimum, and consider that smoke particles are ultrafine (0.1–1 μm), which are harder to capture than typical household dust.
For a 12×14 ft room (168 sq ft) during heavy smoke conditions, you need at least 145 CFM at 5 ACH — and ideally 200+ CFM to handle peak pollution events.
For cigarette smoke, the challenge is even greater because of the sticky tar particles that coat surfaces and continuously off-gas. You'll need significantly more carbon filtration capacity.
